Although there is a lot of speculation that magic mushrooms introduce poison into your system, there is no scientific evidence to support this. However, depending on your state of mind, shrooms can have both positive and negative effects on your psyche.
Contrary to popular belief, magic mushrooms (aka. shrooms) have very few physically adverse side effects. The chemical in the mushroom that causes effects similar to that of LSD, is a combination of psilocin and psilocybin. These two chemicals are widely known for causing effects such as audio and visual hallucinations, a strong flow of creativity, enhanced senses, and a generally euphoric state of mind. Because of this, many people also believe that the drug poses negative effects on the body. Various studies, however, prove that shrooms have very few (and not serious) physical side effects. There are, on the other hand, cases of negative psychedelic and emotional effects.
It is not a very good idea to take shrooms if you are suffering from depression or anxiety. In fact, you probably should not take them if you have any overwhelming negative feelings at all. Since shrooms intensify feelings like this, the result can be what is known as a "bad trip". This is when you are likely to lose grip with reality and possibly cause harm to yourself, or even to another person. Some people also report having flashbacks, extreme anxiety, fear, and even "ego death", a case in which you no longer know who you are. Not every person goes through these, but some do.
One last thing to keep in mind is shrooms are illegal in many countries. It is always important to abide by any laws your city, state, or country may enforce to avoid any legal issues. In the U.S., magic mushrooms are considered a Schedule I drug and can result in jail time if caught possessing them.
