Long answer

Most popular breakfast cereals are not good for you, and Cinnamon Toast Crunch is no exception. In fact, it’s actually one of the worst. With an extremely high sugar content and other harmful ingredients, this high-calorie cereal is better left in the grocery aisle, and away from your pantry.

Like other cereal boxes, Cinnamon Toast Crunch makes great claims about its health benefits. “Guaranteed Whole Grain” is plastered across the top of the box, though it is unclear how much whole grains are actually used in the production. At first glance, even the label looks promising with the addition of daily vitamins. Unfortunately, this cereal is so processed, no one knows how much of these vitamins even remain in the cereal when all is said and done.

Cinnamon Toast Crunch has some of the highest sugar content among cereals on the market. There’s no denying the cinnamon sugary coating on each and every square. A serving size of a mere ¾ cup yields 10 grams of sugar. That’s almost half of the daily recommended amount for children, who are the most common consumers of this cereal. Beginning the day with a bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch can cause spikes in blood sugar and lead to hyperactivity and decreased attention span. Long-term effects of high-sugar diets include tooth decay, obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

Along with the “whole grain” advertisement, Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal boxes also boldly exclaim, “Real cinnamon and sugar in every bite!” Is that supposed to be a comfort? What does that say about the validity and realness of the other ingredients? If you take a closer look, you’ll notice canola oil, food coloring, and BHT food preservatives, among other ingredients that are too complicated to pronounce. Canola oil is highly processed and most likely made from cancer-causing GMOs. Artificial coloring has been linked to allergic reactions and, depending on the variety, cancer. BHT is a dangerous preservative that is actually banned in many countries around the world. Various studies have shown BHT has the potential to accumulate in the body over time resulting in cancer and liver damage.

Cinnamon Toast Crunch, though tasty, is not worth eating. It lacks nutritional value and has an abundance of toxic ingredients. If you’re looking for a new breakfast cereal, choose one that is low in sugar, high in fiber, and certified organic to avoid GMOs.
