Short answer

Smart water is not bad for you. Though the water does not always originate from natural ground water or springs, it goes through a vigorous process of cleaning and is supplemented by minerals and electrolytes.

Long answer

Smartwater is produced by Glaceau, the company that brings you the jewel-toned vitamin waters. Glaceau is part of the Coca-cola brand.

Smartwater is purified by a process called vapor distillation. This is a process that closely simulates what happens in nature in the water cycle, or hydrologic cycle. It occurs when the sun’s energy causes water to be evaporated from the earth’s surface, then subsequently returned in the form of rain.

Most of the facilities where Smartwater is purified and bottled, obtain the water from municipal water sources (tap water). There are a few plants where the water is sourced from protected groundwater that is under the control of the plant where it’s bottled. However, the local authorities have to grant approval for the groundwater to be used in this manner.

Glaceau’s filtration process begins with activation carbon filtration. Water is then evaporated and cooled, separating molecules of water from minerals and other impurities.  Next, ultraviolet light is used to destroy microorganisms. Electrolytes, calcium chloride, potassium bicarbonate, and magnesium chloride, are then added, as the water is re-mineralized. Finally, the water is treated with ozone (O3), a type of oxygen molecule, which quickly reverts to the oxygen state we breathe, O2, and leaves no taste in the water. This last process is called ozonation. The entire process is closely monitored and continually tested. This process results in water with a pH of 6.5, which is slightly acidic.

There are no additives other than the electrolytes. Smartwater contains no sodium, sugar, calories, artificial color or flavors. Additionally, they do not add fluoride to their water. Smartwater is approved by the FDA’s guidelines for bottled water.
