Is Mountain Dew Bad For You?

Grade

F

Short answer

Mountain Dew is terrible for you. There is really no good reason to drink this beverage as it has been proven to cause massive tooth decay, several sugar-related illnesses, and hormonal imbalances due to its BVO content.

Long answer

There really is a lot to be said for a soda involved in a lawsuit which it won with the “acidic enough to dissolve a mouse” defense (video below). That is exactly what lawyers for Mountain Dew said when a lawsuit was brought against them claiming a dead mouse had been found inside one of their cans. In fact, Mountain Dew has a pH value of 3, which is just two steps away from battery acid with a pH of 1. The lawyers claimed that if a mouse had really been inside of the can, it would have dissolved away before the consumer popped the top.

Mountain dew is so bad for the teeth that dentists worldwide refer to extreme tooth decay as “Mountain Dew mouth”. The reason that tooth decay is so prevalent among regular Mountain Dew drinkers is its high sugar content (11 teaspoons per can – more than Coca Cola and Pepsi) and an abundance of citric acid.

Besides rapid tooth decay, regular consumption of Mountain Dew has also been linked to an increase in blood sugar, obesity, diabetes, skin lesions, nerve disorder, muscle problems, and memory loss. Some of these problems are due to the sugar content, others – like nerve disorder and muscle problems – can be linked to thyroid-wrecking bromine, which is found in the brominated vegetable oil used in Mountain Dew.

Other ingredients that help make Mountain Dew not just unhealthy, but downright dangerous, are sodium benzoate (reacts with Vitamin C to form a carcinogen) and yellow dye (which is made from coal tar). About the only benefit you can get from drinking Mountain Dew is getting some extra energy – something you may not have needed if you weren’t drinking this brain-dulling soda in the first place.
